Net Q & A

Question of the Month: August 2002

Is there a way to shorten a long URL so that it won't wrap, and thereby become unusable in an e-mail?

Answer

Long URLs frequently become unusable in e-mail messages because the recipients' e-mail programs "wrap" the text at the end of a line, breaking the URL. This is particularly a problem in situations where sending out a URL to a survey, or online event.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution, drawn to my attention by Rick Klau, of Interface Software:

Visit Make A Shorter Link, aka http://www.makeashorterlink.com

The site creates alternative addresses, or aliases, that can replace longer ones. The site is admirably easy to use, merely paste a long URL into the box, and the site translates it into a shorter link.

By default, the shorter link leads to a transition page that forwards visitors, but you can adjust the options to delete this intermediary step.
