Downloading

Downloading means transferring files from a distant computer to yours. One of the attractions of Internet use is the large number of files that can be downloaded at little or no cost. Download.com and Tucows ("The Ultimate Collection of Windows Software") have large collection of downloadable files. Here are a few specific files you may find useful:

Browsers

It's usually a good idea to keep your browser fairly current. Here are some popular choices:

bulletNetscape Navigator -- Get newest version of  Longtime Favorite Web browser.
bulletInternet Explorer -- Microsoft's newest web browser.
bulletOpera -- Popular alternative that is noticeably faster than the competition.

Popular Plug- Ins

These programs extend the capabilities of your web browser.

bulletPKZIP  Compress or decompress files.
bulletWINZIP  File compression, decompression, and more using graphic interface. Alternate site
bulletAcrobat Reader -- Necessary to read "Portable Document Format" files, popular
bulletReal Player -- Allows you to enjoy audio and video feeds from many web sites. Not just a toy; can be useful for factual and legal research, such as archived interviews at National Public Radio.

Internet Access Programs

bulletE-mail programs. Most lawyers will spend more time using their e-mail program than any other application, so it makes sense to get and learn to use a good e-mail program. The Microsoft and Netscape browsers referenced above come bundled with reasonable e-mail programs. Here are two more powerful stand-alone e-mail programs:
bulletEudora  The most popular "industrial strength" e-mail program. "Lite" version free. "Pro" version has extra features.
bulletPegasus Mail, by David Harris, is free (not shareware), and about as powerful as Eudora Pro. "The combination of Newmail filters, Notice Boards, extensions, user-defined gateways, and the wealth of configuration options makes Pegasus the most powerful e-mail agent we've seen." Jack Rickard, Boardwatch magazine.

Security

bulletPGP: The most widely respected strong encryption program available.
bulletMIT web page -- Free for personal noncommercial use.
bulletNetwork Associates -- Commercially licensed version of PGP.
